Narrative Writing Lesson – Dice Writing: A day in the beach

dice diary beachThis fun and engaging writing lesson is ideal for reluctant writers and those students who always say “I don’t know what to write about!”

A story starter is provided that your students can cut off the worksheet and glue into their books. Then they roll a dice and use the table to see what they should write about next. So in this story about a day at the beach, if they roll a 3, they write about their brother’s enormous sand castle.

The dice prompts are meant to give the students something to build on, to spark their own imaginations. Sometimes they will be able to take an idea and write pages about it, other times they will write about an idea and then roll for the next idea.

Model the idea for your students first, but it won’t take them long to roll with the idea – pun intended!
